HOMExperience Home Décor Hint: Decorating Ideas For Your Home

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 by E- Lifestyle

HOMExperience in Clay Terrace allows you to explore more than 24,000 design features to truly personalize your new home or update your existing home. Thinking about updating your central Indiana home or building a new home with all new design features? In this month's HOMExperience Home Décor Hint, Candace Crooks, Designer with HOMExperience, discusses decorating ideas, ideas and... ideas!

Decorating your first home or apartment? Updating an older home? Or looking for a few home decorating ideas?

Ideas for the Bedroom: Avoid "overdoing it" with flower patterns. These patterns convey life and color, mix and match well, but need to be edited carefully by adding other elements. Striped pillows provide a bit of a contrast and a cool color on the walls quiets things down and keeps the flower-pattern look from being too much. Remember having less furniture puts a spotlight on other things in the room. Since these pieces will have a greater impact, choose them carefully.

Ideas for the Living Room: Make a non-working fireplace the focal point of the room by adding elements of fire with a large candelabra. Go a step further and add some texture with stacked split-logs. Also, avoid the white-out effect and cover large, plain walls with sculptural artwork, mirrors or removable decals.

Ideas for the Kitchen or Dining Room: For townhomes or apartments where space is at a real premium, a mix of materials and colors highlight the eclectic feel of these types of housing. For homes with space, try opaque shades for Kitchen Islands in order to prevent the glaring reflection in the granite countertop that clear shades would not prevent.

Ideas for the Bathroom: Valances above the tub area let in as much natural light as possible, but can lack in privacy. Roller shades can be installed underneath to help this problem. If you’re looking for a spot of color in that boring white-walled loo, consider a wallpaper border, also a great idea for a child’s bathroom that you might want to update easily when they grow up.

- Candace Crooks, Designer, HOMExperience

HomeLife's Helpful Homeowner Hint: Stay Cool This Summer Central Indiana

Tuesday, July 20, 2010 by E- Lifestyle

HomeLife's Helpful Homeowner Hint: Stay Cool This Summer Central Indiana
-From Estridge's HomeLife Team

Summers can be long and hot, particularly if you are losing money on your home's utility bill. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 43% of any homeowner’s utility bill goes towards heating or cooling. In the July HomeLife's Helpful Homeowner Hint, we share ways you can save money through your cooling bill.

  • Seal Those Leaks That Leak Money. Check around chimneys, windows, doors, furnace and water flues and electrical outlets. Caulk or weather stripping offer great solutions for windows and doors. Try foam sealant on those larger spaces.
  • Insulate Your Wallet and Air Ducts. Every homeowner should consider insulating their air duct work to cover leaks and to save a heavy burden upon their wallet.
  • Become a Fan Fanatic. Be sure you turn off bathroom or kitchen exhaust fans within 20 minutes after you are done bathing or cooking. If you are considering replacing an exhaust fan, be sure you look at high-efficiency models.
  • Program and Pocket the Savings. A properly installed programmable thermostat can save money through controlling your environment. Simply turn back the thermostat by 15% for at least eight hours and pocket the savings.
  • Save Bucks with Better Blinds. Keep the summer heat out of your home with shades or drapes.
  • Fiscal Filter Fun. Be sure you change or clean your home's filters once a month.
  • Energy Efficient Effects. Try to select energy-efficient products when you buy new cooling equipment. Ask for the energy facts sheets for different designs or models, and try to compare potential usage.
  • Stop The Santa Claus Effect. Has your chimney fallen into disuse? Can you feel a draft from your chimney? Try purchasing an inflatable chimney balloon to stop the Santa Claus Effect.

HomeLife's Helpful Homeowner Hint: An Ounce of Prevention

Thursday, June 10, 2010 by E- Lifestyle
HomeLife's Helpful Homeowner Hints: An Ounce of Prevention
- From the Estridge HomeLife team

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." - Ben Franklin

Estridge 3-year HomeLife Maintenance & Reliability ProgramNot much has changed since Ben Franklin penned this now famous line. It's common knowledge to consider ways to prevent problems, rather than fixing them once they arise. Below are a few simple and inexpensive maintenance tips that can prevent monstrous and expensive problems:
  • A shock to the wallet: Cracks, discolorations and signs of warping in electrical outlets and cords are bad signs. Look to replace them. Be sure you hire an electrician if you find an outlet that no longer holds a plug. Improperly working outlets, fixtures or light switches can shock hundreds of dollars out of your wallet.

  • Care for your air: Be sure you regularly change your air filters. Dirty filters cause more than 60 percent of all service calls. Look to change your air filters every month, particularly if shedding pets or kids are present in the home. Kids and pets can be dirty!

  • Do you feel that draft: Windows and doors are the two biggest losers of cool air in the summer. To prevent this look to weatherproof both your windows and doors. You’ll find a benefit in your bills during both cold and hot weather. Check the seal quality of your doors and windows with a digital thermometer. Be sure to inspect caulking for cracks or distortions.

  • Leaky FaucetLeaky toilets and faucets leak money: Fix that drip – it could save hundreds of dollars annually on your utility statement. Call a plumber if you find you’re up a leaky creek without a paddle.

  • Be bold concerning mold: Make sure the caulking in your bathroom is secure and not cracked or damaged. Water penetration, which leads to mold and other issues, can be prevented if the subsurface, typically drywall, remains dry. Additionally, you can avoid replacement of fixtures if the surface, typically tile, is kept watertight.

  • Leaky roofs lead to lighter wallets: Just because you have a leak doesn’t mean you have to replace the whole roof. But you should avoid a bucket -- a small leak can cause dozens of issues, turning into a major and expensive fiasco. Call a roofer and be crystal clear you are looking to repair the single leak, not replace the entire roof.

  • Juice up that pump: Be sure you monitor your sump pump. Charge or change the batteries regularly. You may need to update the pump itself every few years. Water in the basement can cause thousands of dollars in damages, plus destroy any personal items in storage.

New Home Construction Knowledge 101, Tip 2: New Home Construction Budgets are No Bull

Monday, March 29, 2010 by estridge homes

To ensure quality construction results, certain percentages should be allotted to particular areas of home construction. Why is this important? It keeps the potential homeowner and the new home builder aware of how the new home construction costs are allotted. It also ensures the quality of the home, thus maximizing the resale value of the home.

When thinking about building your new home in central Indiana, whether it is in a new home neighborhood or on your homesite, the following budget breakdowns by percentages ensure quality results. This budget reflects a home valued at $200,000:

  • Homesite: 20%
  • Permits: 1%
  • Foundation: 9%
  • Structure and/or Shell: 28%
  • Mechanical Systems: 10%
  • Drywall and/or Insulation: 6%
  • Paint: 3%
  • Interior trim: 5%
  • Cabinets: 2%
  • Flooring: 4%
  • Interior Finishes: 2%
  • Exterior Finishes: 6%
  • Miscellaneous: 4%

Variations in these percentages may be required to ensure a quality or affordable product. Talk to your central Indiana home builder about the budget breakdown of your new home or visit an Estridge neighborhood to learn more about new Estridge homes today.

Attack your home's allergens!

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 by E- Lifestyle

Spring has sprung at Anderson Hall in FishersWith the beautiful spring weather, central Indiana homeowners are busy preparing their homes while battling the common spring allergy symptoms - a stuffy nose, itchy throat and red eyes.

That's right! It's allergy season for Indianapolis homeowners!

While most believe their home is a safe retreat from allergens, for many allergy sufferers your home may be causing more harm than good. Below are a few spring tips from Estridge, central Indiana's premiere builder of new homes and neighborhood, for allergy sufferers to use around the house:

1. It's a spring clean thing! Want to return your home to the glory it was when it was a newly constructed home? Spring serves as a great time to do a total cleaning of your home. Get rid of excess clutter, knickknacks and unneeded objects. All that stuff collects dust!

2. Avoid filter fiascos! Take a moment and check your filters throughout your home. While this should be done every month, spring serves as a great reminder to check the filters on your furnace, air conditioner and dehumidifiers.

3. Don’t let the bed bugs bite! Bedding should be washed and cleaned every week in water that's at least 130 degrees. The high heat is needed to kill off dust mites and bacteria.

4. What an ugly carpet! Home decor and furnishings can cause unseen problems. A move from carpet to a solid surface flooring such as hardwood floors can eliminate 90% of dust mites. If you enjoy carpeting in your home, we suggest avoiding thick shag carpeting.

Friday, December 4, 2009 by estridge homes

In the past, homebuyers have held off on beginning to build their new home or moving to the home of their dreams until after the busy holiday season. However, this year, there are simply too many reasons to begin building a new Indianapolis home today.

Below are a few reasons new Estridge homeowners have listed why they began new construction on their new Estridge home now:

-          A Home Full of Free All-New Furniture from Estridge

Now is the time to move. Rates change daily and homeowners are required to close on their new home before the end of April to receive the homebuyer tax credit. Plus, Fully Furnished & Finished from Estridge is a pilot release only until January 10th!

"Paul, your message of 'exactly the way you've always imagined' is probably the best collection of words I have ever heard in my life. Frankly, I have been opposed to 'your dream home' concept because nothing is ever 100%. But after I saw your fantastic video on the web site last night... the only dream I could remember was being one of three buyers who was trying to buy one of the two available Estridge homes. I've told others about it today. Great message."

This is a great program and I will personallyFully Furnished & Finished Homes by Estridge recommend it to my clients. You folks do everything right and I always enjoy selling your new construction as things happen as promised. Great Job!"

"Estridge is always setting the bar in innovative new home construction for our market. Awesome thinkers, awesome to react to buyers."

"Fully Furnished & Finished is 'too good to be true', but is obviously true. Thanks for launching a tremendous program!"

"This is an exciting program - I've always been excited about Estridge homes. This just adds to the client experience."

Pilot Release of Fully Furnished & Finished homes by Estridge

Friday, November 20, 2009 by estridge homes

So, why is  Fully Furnished & Finished a pilot release until January 10th?

As an Indianapolis new home builder, and like many other organizations, we are constantly looking to better serve our homeowners and build them the home of their dreams. Our home décor store at Clay Terrace in Carmel, HOMExperience, provides us with the unique opportunity of working with homeowners throughout the full home design process - not only building their new luxury home, but furnishing it as well. This relationship presented us with a disconnect which some homeowners feel between the home they imagine themselves living in and the empty one they move in to.

We believe that we can better serve clients by providing them with a fully furnished new Estridge luxury home when they move in. But, we want to know what you think and what our homeowners think. This short pilot release allows us to get feedback from the greater Indianapolis real estate market to see how Fully Furnished homes better serves our homeowners needs. So, we invite everyone to join the conversation.

Visit www.fully.estridge.com to learn more, share your thoughts and provide feedback on how we can better serve our homeowners.
